Oakland Fire/Rescue was formed in 1977 by the Town of Oakland due to a need for more immediate response to fire emergencies in the community. Initially, the department had 1 piece of apparatus, a Pumper. They were stationed off Highway 194, behind the Water Plant. There were 10 volunteers. The first chief was Barry Burch. We have since evolved into a 20 member department with 5 pieces of apparatus, 2 Pumpers, 1 Brush Truck, 1 Rescue Truck, and 1 Tanker.

Each of our first response units are equipped with AED's and all personnel are trained and qualified to use them. As you can see from our roster, we are well staffed with medically trained and qualified personnel, which positions us well to respond to the majority of our calls, which are for medical assistance.

Our Primary/First Response area has a population in excess of 9,731 and covers an area in excess of 68 square miles. In addition, through mutual aid agreements with the Fayette County Fire Department we are second in to Somerville, Macon, and Hickory Wythe. We also provide back-up coverage to any community in Fayette County thay may need us. We are proud to say that we have an ISO rating of 5.

We have a comprehensive training program with regular training weekly along with special training sessions as needed.
